House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy did not respond to a CNN question on Thursday when asked if he was concerned about blatant misrepresentations.
Santos is facing scrutiny over his resume after The New York Times revealed on Monday that his biography was partly fictional.CNN confirmed the details reported by The New York Times on Monday. This may have included misrepresenting part of his resume about his college education and work history.
CNN’s KFile reported on Wednesday that Santos’ claim that his grandparents “survived the Holocaust” by changing their surnames as Ukrainian Jewish refugees from Belgium is based on a family tree compiled by the genealogy website, About Jewish Refugees. Records, interviews with several genealogists and other sources contradicted.
An attorney for Santos declined to comment to CNN on Wednesday.
“To the people of #NY03, I have my story to tell and it will be told next week. I remain committed to answering your questions and providing the results of my campaign. We would like to assure everyone that we are in a position to: public safety, education, etc.,” Santos said in a tweet.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told CNN on Thursday that it would be up to Republicans to decide what to do with Santos.
“Santos is now tattooed by Republicans in Congress. It’s up to them to decide what to do with it,” she said.
