Rescuers were looking for two people who may have been buried in an avalanche at a ski resort in western Austria on Sunday.
It was initially feared that 10 people were missing after snow, ice and boulders began to fall at the Lech/Zuers free ski slopes around 3pm on Christmas Day, according to the Austrian Press Agency (Austrian Press). APA) reported.
A video of skiers showing the avalanche led to initial estimates that 10 people were buried, the APA reported, citing Hermann Fercher of the Lech/Zuers tourist office.
One injured person was rescued. Another person was injured but was able to free himself and go to the hospital, Christian Gantner of the Regional Security Council told the APA.
The other six people found in the skier’s video were not injured and only two are currently missing.
After the avalanche was reported, several helicopters and search parties were deployed and about 200 people were involved in the immediate search.
Those involved in the search requested headlamps so that the rescue operation could continue into the evening, the APA reported.
