Operations were in turmoil on Monday after a brutal weekend in which many airlines struggled, but the Southwest’s predicament stood out.
After Southwest Airlines canceled about 46% of its flights on Christmas Day, the budget travel pioneer scrapped about 60% of its schedule on Monday, or more than 2,500 flights, according to FlightAware.
Other airlines have also made rough moves in the severe weather that has crossed the country since last week. Delta Air Lines DAL,
About 20% of flights on Saturday and Sunday have been cancelled. Alaska Air Group Inc. ALK,
canceled about 65% of its flights on Friday. Spirit Airlines Co., Ltd. SAVE,
On Sunday, we canceled 25% of our flights.
However, no other carrier experienced the same level of continued disruption. Some also saw cancellations drop on Monday, but Southwest tallies rose. According to union leaders, it was due to a combination of operational challenges.
