Storm moving through Central California expected to be at peak strength during peak travel

Fresno County, California (KFSN) — An estimated 102 million Americans are driving to their destinations this holiday season.

Some of the busiest days on the roads are expected to be Tuesday and Wednesday, just as the storm passing through central California is at its peak in strength.

Officials are urging people to take precautions now to keep themselves safe.

Due to rain, California Highway Patrol is asking drivers to prepare their vehicles.

“We always want to make sure our maintenance is up to date, especially when it comes to tires, headlights and windshield wipers,” said CHP Officer Anthony Dalton.

Officials say the best thing drivers can do, especially in a storm, is slow down.

That’s because one puddle can throw you out of control.

“When you hit them at a certain speed, the tires are physically unable to move the water from under the vehicle fast enough, causing hydroplaning,” Officer Dalton said.

With the series of storms, meteorologists say there is a danger of flooding.

It also means the possibility of landslides.

Authorities are monitoring the burn scars of the Washburn fire in Yosemite National Park.

“Despite the La Niña, our season got off to a pretty strong start,” said Andy Bollenbacher, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Hanford.

A La Niña pattern usually results in a drier winter than an El Niño pattern.

Meteorologists say this rain and snow flow is actually normal, a pattern not seen in drought-hit California in recent years.

In preparation for flooding, Madera County is making sandbags available to residents.

Sand and 10 bags are free, but you’ll need to bring your own shovel and fill the bags yourself.

But Madera County Sheriff Commander Jason Clark says that if you have to go, you should plan ahead.
