asbury park, new jersey — This time of year is especially difficult for many families struggling to make ends meet.

That’s why a food company in New Jersey is giving out free meals to people in need.

Free hugs and free meals abound on the streets of Asbury Park.

“I think it’s great what they’re doing here with this program,” said resident Omar Fitchet.

No limit per person. I have no questions. Take as much as you need.

“No one should go hungry, especially at this time of year. Food is a right, not a privilege,” said Macrobites co-founder David Lewis.

Lewis, Fritz George, and Jarrett Atkins are self-proclaimed former troublemakers. All three had served time on drug charges long ago before turning their lives around and opening his Macrobites.

“We’ve spent a lot of time running around the streets and terrorizing this community, so it’s really nice to be able to give back to the community,” Lewis said.

They sell prepackaged meals on the market, ship them across the United States, and actively give back.

“People know that when they’re in trouble, they can walk through this door and get something for free to fill their bellies. And it feels good for us. It’s good karma. You’re coming back to us, aren’t you?” Lewis said.

Since Christmas Day, they have been cooking, packaging and distributing 600 to 1,000 healthy meals per day.

Locals are grateful as food prices skyrocket.

“It’s hard to make money to buy food. I work every day and it’s hard,” said Asbury Park resident Lynetta Wall. “I can’t afford to buy anything, especially since prices are going up.”

And as fast as the food is served, it’s picked up.

Meals are available daily through New Year’s Eve.
