HASTINGS, Nebraska (KSNB) – An intensifying storm will make its presence felt in Nebraska tonight. It will rain first after midnight, turning to snow in the western regions. Tonight’s temperatures are expected to hover above freezing in the Tri-Cities most nights, so rain will turn to snow on Thursday morning. Temperatures are close to the snow limit, so some areas may see some rainfall that can carry over into the morning commute, but one or two counties to the north and west may see snow.

This storm dynamics may be strong enough to overcome the surface temperature and facilitate its transformation. Snow appears to be falling in a narrow band extending from the southwest corner of the state through the center and into northeastern Nebraska. The current forecast calls for 1 to 3 inches of snow, but a burst of snow with a heavier final total within the band is possible.

Winter weather advisories come into effect when visibility can be poor and roads can be slippery, so check the latest forecasts and allow for extra travel time. Afternoon highs are expected to climb into the high 30s.

The storm should move quickly and leave the state by evening. The next few days will resume with temperatures in the low to mid 30s on Friday and Saturday respectively. A different, more powerful storm is expected to affect Nebraska from New Year’s Eve (Sunday) through Monday and possibly into the night of Tuesday. This will be a much stronger storm. The course of this storm has yet to be determined, but more snow is likely, so take that into account in your travel plans.
