A man charged with breaking into House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s home and beating her husband, Paul Pelosi, with a hammer, pleaded not guilty to multiple felony charges in court on Wednesday.
David DePape, dressed in a bright orange prison-issue sweater and sweatpants, appeared in a San Francisco courthouse, received a brief hearing, and waived his right to a speedy trial.
Pelosi sustained serious injuries in the October 28 violent attack, including a fractured skull, a circular dent on the right side of her head and a deep laceration to her right arm, prosecutors said.
At a preliminary hearing earlier this month, San Francisco Police Sgt. Carla Hurley testified that when DePap first broke into House Speaker Pelosi’s house, she claimed she was on a “suicide mission.”
DePape, an illegal Canadian citizen who worked as a landscaper before the attack, said in a Harley interview that he attacked California Governor Gavin Newsom and actor Tom Hanks as part of his twisted revenge. said he was planning to plot.
When Paul told Depapu that his wife wasn’t home and asked him why he was looking for her, the alleged intruder said it was because she was second in line to the president.
“He wanted to show Nancy Pelosi… that their actions have consequences. [politicians’] Hurley testified at a preliminary hearing on December 14.
Nancy was in Washington DC at the time of the attack. During the preliminary hearing, the prosecutor also displayed the hammer with which Depapu allegedly hit Paul severely.
Paul manages to call 911 and calmly tells the caller that a stranger is in the house.
San Francisco Police Officer Kyle Cagney said he saw Paul and Depape standing in the doorway when he and another officer arrived at Pelosi’s home and knocked on the front door around 2:20 a.m. testified.
“They both had one hammer. The man on the left, Pelosi, had the hammer head. [DePape] I had a handle,” said Cagney.
Cagney said he saw Depapp raise his hammer and step forward before lowering the weapon “very hard” on Pelosi’s head and seeing the 82-year-old man fall unconscious to the floor.
DePape faces multiple federal and state charges, including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, wrongful imprisonment, and threatening a government employee’s family.
Prosecutors also allege that DePappe severely injured Paul Pelosi and was armed with a hammer during the attack.
DePape is scheduled to return to court on February 23 to set a jury trial date.
“Mr. DePap will be indicted to the fullest extent of the law and held accountable for his heinous crimes,” San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said in a statement after Wednesday’s hearing.
