You may remember that the Deep South has dealt with two tornado outbreaks in recent months. The biggest threat of severe weather, including tornadoes, will move from eastern Texas and Oklahoma to Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi on January 2nd and 3rd. On January 3rd and 4th, the threat of severe weather moves to the southeastern United States.

On the cold side of the system, heavy snowfall increases in the plains and upper Midwest. Some uncertainty remains as to where the heaviest snow and ice will fall, but where the heaviest bands are set could total double-digit snowfall.
A series of atmospheric rivers will continue to hit the West, threatening the low-lying areas of California, Oregon and Washington with flash floods and landslides. However, the rains will help significantly ameliorate the severe drought conditions that are ongoing in the West.
Higher areas of the Sierra Nevada could see several feet of snow by next weekend.
Through the first week of 2023, this brisk weather looks set to continue in many parts of the country.
