1 dead, 9 hurt in shooting near New Year’s Eve party in Alabama

One person was killed and nine injured in a shooting in downtown Mobile, Alabama, several blocks away from where thousands of people had gathered in the streets for a New Year’s Eve party, police said.

Police on Sunday said a male suspect was in custody and is being treated.Once released from hospital, the unidentified suspect will be transferred to Metro Prison where he will be charged with murder, police said. Stated.

Television news footage showed police running and riding horses to the area where the shooting took place about 45 minutes before midnight on Saturday.

Police said the man who was killed was 24 years old, but did not give his name. The injured ranged in age from 17, when he was 57, to 57, with injuries ranging from non-life-threatening to severe, police said in a statement.

Filming took place a few blocks away from the main stage of the MoonPie Over Mobile festival. The event continued with fireworks and moon pies being dropped from downtown buildings at midnight to mark the beginning of 2023.

Mobile Police Chief Paul Prine told CBS affiliate WKRG-TV near the scene.

“It should give all of us downtown some comfort that this wasn’t a random shooting that took someone’s life,” Prine said.
