New York A man was killed and a woman in critical condition when his car fell off the track at a Long Island Railroad yard in Brooklyn.
It happened Friday afternoon on Vanderbilt Avenue near Atlantic Avenue.
The Audi took a barricade as it passed a fence and fell 30 feet into the Atlantic Terminal rail yard.
"Most of us were obviously accelerating and popped out of the way," said eyewitness D Elliott.
Elliott says it was like a scene from a movie. Around 12:45 p.m. on Friday, he was taking a walk to see a friend when he and a pedestrian heard a car accelerate from the McDonald's ramp across the street. so he moved out of the way.
"Several people rushed down the stairs and immediately tried to see who could be dragged from there. We checked the status of those individuals," he said.
Police believe the 70-year-old man at the wheel had a medical emergency when the incident happened.
A woman traveling with the man was taken to Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, where the man was pronounced dead. Passengers are still in critical condition.
The car was towed onto the rails hours later.
It is still unclear what the relationship between driver and passenger was.
Police are awaiting autopsy results to determine exactly what happened to the driver that led to the crash.
LIRR service was not interrupted.
