Exploring Food and Agricultural Products students complete EFNEP class

Kaydence Brown, a seventh grade student at North Rowan Middle, has completed six core lessons in the Teen Cuisine curriculum. Rowan County Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program educator Kaisha Lukes collaborates with Lynn Wilson, the school’s regional coordinator, and Katie Lynn Dionne, a food and produce explorer teacher at North Rowan Middle School. to integrate both curricula and encourage students to learn about nutrition.
Teen Cuisine is designed to teach adolescents in grades 6-12 important life skills to promote optimal health now and in the future. The curriculum addresses key concepts related to nutrition, food preparation and cooking, food safety and physical activity using approaches and strategies that foster learning and behavior change in teenagers. was developed, delivered and evaluated by the Virginia Cooperative Extension through a strong partnership between the Virginia Family Nutrition Program, 4-H and the Program Area of Family and Consumer Sciences.
Kaydence learned and applied MyPlate to her meal and snack plans, identified nutritious foods and beverages low in added sugars, saturated fat and sodium, demonstrated her knife-safe skills, and helped prevent food poisoning. I prepared food to prevent and used food labels to make healthier food choices. Understand the importance of snacks, group team building activities, and physical activity and explore ways to incorporate them into your daily routine. Upon completing the course, Cadence received a Certificate of Completion, NC EFNEP Skill Builder (water bottle, cinch carry bag, insulated lunch bag, pencil, jump rope, giveaway, measuring cup) and continued a healthy lifestyle.
