Thai Mee Up Kula 2 received red “closed” Placard by Hawaii Department of Health Maui Food Safety Branch due to cockroach infestation.
During routine inspections last week, DOH inspectors observed approximately 25 roaches in various life stages throughout the food truck. This includes shelves above service windows, under pans, to-go food containers, and floors.
Thai Me Up Kula 2 is operated by Maui Mobile Food Court LLC and is available at 28 Kiopar Place in Makawao.
Food establishments should receive a red placard on Dec. 22 and remain closed until all violations are resolved and the health department allows mobile units to open to the public, the DOH said.
Additional serious violations noted in the inspection included numerous droppings on wipe cloths on the ledge above the service window. Accumulation of grease and food debris throughout the truck, which is a food source for cockroaches. It was observed that the mobile entrance door was left open during inspection, with no screens or other means installed to prevent entry of flies and other pests. Also, the lack of proper temperature control in the prep chill was rectified on site by moving potentially hazardous foods to separate units with proper temperatures.
The Department of Health requires food premises to take corrective action, including professional pest control treatments to eradicate pests, before food premises are allowed to reopen. Provide the district inspector with a bill for pest control services. Thorough cleaning to eliminate all potential pest food sources. Screen at doorways to reduce pest entry when doors are left open.
A follow-up examination is scheduled for Thursday.
The Department of Health’s Food Safety Division protects and promotes the health of Hawaii residents and visitors through the education of food industry workers and regulation of food facilities statewide. Branches conduct regular health inspections of food establishments that prepare, manufacture, distribute or sell food.
The chapter also investigates sources of foodborne illness and potential contamination. We are also responsible for mitigating the impact of these incidents to prevent future occurrences.
