Funviralpark Boston – The Greater Boston Food Bank enters the new year with resources under pressure as a result of inflation.
Massachusetts’ largest food bank faces the same challenges as food banks across the country. Soaring food prices and declining donations.
Incoming monetary donations are not far off, with no end in sight to rising food prices.
That’s in addition to increased demand.
At least 1.8 million people in Massachusetts (32% of the state’s adult population) are food insecure, according to a Greater Boston Food Bank study earlier this year.
“It’s incredibly challenging. The dollar is definitely not as advanced as it used to be,” said Apryl Wallace of the Greater Boston Food Bank. “We are buying more food for more people, but the price of that food is higher.”
With less food donated by citizens, the Greater Boston Food Bank now purchases approximately 70% of the food it distributes.
“It’s gone quickly and the need is growing by the day,” says Wallace.
