28 people confirmed dead in Buffalo Niagara blizzard; city deaths rise to 20

At least 28 people have died in Erie and Niagara counties in the snowstorm, officials confirmed.

Erie County Administrator Mark Polonkers said late Monday afternoon that the county coroner had confirmed a total of 27 storm-related deaths in the county.

Officials in Buffalo, Erie County, New York, said Monday they have personnel, equipment and supplies ready for the blizzard that hit western New York over the holiday weekend. At the time, the situation was so bad that there wasn’t much they could do.

Niagara County reported Sunday that it has confirmed one death from the storm, a 27-year-old Lockport man who was pronounced dead on Sunday apparently from carbon monoxide poisoning.

In the city of Buffalo alone, Buffalo Police spokesperson Michael J. DeGeorge said the city’s death toll related to the storm is now at 20.

“The Buffalo Police Department has recovered 18 of these precious souls,” Mayor Byron W. Brown said at the 12:30 p.m. storm briefing on Monday. ‘s police officers are human, and it’s painful to find dead community members.”

“This was a very difficult and dangerous storm,” he added. “It’s a once-in-a-generation storm, and it’s been described as all the predicted stuff we got in the city of Buffalo, and then some.”

Polonkers said 14 of the 27 deaths in Erie County were found outdoors. Because four people had no fever. Three were due to his EMS delays. Three were found inside the vehicle. Three were due to cardiac events during shoveling or snow removal.
