Casey Maccarone’s mother has always been kind of a superwoman, but Maccarone was still concerned when Monique Alexander decided to go out on Christmas Eve.
It would have been an easy decision any other day, but a blizzard has set in, bringing more than 50 inches of snow to parts of western New York.
Maccarone was already worried after seeing the store closure notice on Facebook, she told CNN.
But her mother wanted to go, and Alexander, 52, said she would soon return without saying where she was going. Macaron, who has lived with Alexander since August, said she thought her mother was going to the store before it closed.
Alexander never returned. Her body was found just a few hundred feet from her home.
“We were waiting for her to come home. But we knew right away that something was wrong, so we accepted it immediately, but emergency responders weren’t allowed outside.” So it’s hard to know that she’s been outside for so long, too,” Macaron said outside the family… returned home Wednesday.
Alexander had experienced severe storms before and was walking everywhere.
“She always felt like Superwoman and invincible, so I think she thought she could handle the situation,” Macaron said. I think she just thought she was strong enough.”

Alexander left at about 3:00 pm. A few hours later, Macaron posted about his mother on her Facebook group for Buffalo residents enduring increasingly dire weather. About 15 minutes later, her stranger texted her, describing her mother’s coat and her blue jeans. She confirmed it was Alexander and she asked him if he had seen her.
“Can I call you?” Macaron said he asked her.
Upon joining the video chat, he immediately broke down. The man told her that he was stuck and walking when he saw Alexander in the snow. He kept her body out of the elements under the shade of her company so that she would not be buried under the snow.
The National Guard then recovered her body. Alexander was one of at least 37 people who died in Erie County, 17 of whom were found outdoors, officials say, but the total will almost certainly rise.
Maccarone said the family lost its rock and someone they could rely on for everything.
“My children lost their grandmother. It was the most important role in her life… being a good grandmother,” she said. “And now they have nothing but memories.” .”
