The Razorbacks (7-6) led 38-13 at one point in the 3rd quarter and led by 18 points in the 4th. However, Kansas (6-7) took the game into overtime before KJ Jefferson hit Rashod his Dubinion from the backfield for the two-point conversion.
Playing in their first bowl game since 2008, Kansas had a chance of a draw after two overtime games thanks to college football rules. The Jayhawks ran end-around to back up quarterback Jason Bean, but his pass on the run sailed from the back of the end zone.
KU and Arkansas traded touchdowns in the first two overtime, with Arkansas thinking they won the game in the second OT. College overtime rules require teams to complete his 2-point conversion after scoring his TD in his OT in second. Arkansas put up his eight to start his second extra period, and KU QB Jaron Daniels was stopped short of the goal line on Kansas’ game-tying conversion attempt.
However, officials demanded that the attack on Daniels be targeted and supported requests for lengthy replay reviews. A targeting call gave Kansas another shot at the tie, and the Jayhawks forced a third OT.
Any game that goes past two overtime will be a 2-point conversion shootout. It’s basically a college football version of a penalty kick. A two-point shootout was implemented to reduce the length of the game.
Had Kansas won in overtime, it would have completed one of the greatest bowl game comebacks in recent memory. and the Jayhawks needed to get an onside kick to get an extra-time chance against Arkansas.
KU won all 17 points they had in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 38-20 with 1:05 remaining. With no timeouts and Arkansas inexplicably not moving to recover the kick, KU had to go onside his kick. Kansas recovered and was in the red zone after the first offensive play.
A TD pass to Luke Grimm set up a two-point pass to Lawrence Arnold to tie the score at 38-38 with 41 seconds remaining. Arkansas then played in overtime instead of playing on a potential game-winning field goal in regulation.
Daniels finished the game with 37 of 55 passes and two interceptions for 544 yards and five TDs. His QB KJ Jefferson for Arkansas completed 19 of his 29 pass completions for 287 yards, two TDs and he threw one interception, and 14 rushes for 130 yards and a scored two goals. The Razorbacks played most of the game without the Stars sending Rocket Sanders back after ending the game on the third carry.
Kansas found themselves trailing 31-13 at halftime thanks to three turnovers in the first half. However, Arkansas fumbled back into the game in the second half after four consecutive punts to set Kansas’ penultimate regulation score.
