Raleigh, North Carolina — Duke Energy again asked customers on Sunday to limit power usage at night to prevent blackouts after temperatures dipped to 10 degrees Celsius for three nights in a row.
Utilities began rolling blackouts Saturday morning, selectively turning off power to clusters of customers as a way to reduce strain on the grid as a whole.
“When we were faced with the challenge of losing generations and bringing in others from across the region, the challenge came,” Brooks said.
An alert sent at 8:00 pm Sunday night warned of possible additional rotation outages until Monday morning.
“Until 10am on Monday, please turn off unnecessary electrical equipment to minimize unnecessary energy use,” a warning was displayed.
Here are some ways to save energy.
- Set thermostat to 68 degrees or less
- Turn off lights that don’t need to be on
- Avoid using large appliances such as dryers and dishwashers
Under clear skies, outside temperatures soared to a near-acceptable 36 degrees on Sunday afternoon, before plummeting again after dark. Lows are expected to drop to around 16 degrees on Monday morning, before the sun warms up to around 40 degrees by late afternoon.
The 50s will return on Wednesday and Thursday, and highs will be in the mid-60s by the end of the week.
