Christmas weekend is going to be miserable in most parts of New York.
On Thursday, Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency across New York in preparation for a major storm expected to hit the Northeast over the holiday weekend.
The measure will take effect at 6 a.m. Friday, when winter storm Elliott, dubbed a “once in a generation” weather phenomenon by the National Weather Service, is expected to hit the region.
“With Mother Nature throwing everything at us this weekend, we advise New Yorkers considering a vacation trip to travel before Friday or after Sunday to ensure their safety.
A so-called bomb cyclone, with atmospheric pressure dropping very quickly in a strong storm, was predicted to develop near the Great Lakes late Thursday night through Friday.
A blizzard warning, coastal flood warning, high wind warning, cold weather warning, and winter storm warning are all in effect for New York City.
The state has completely closed to commercial vehicles approximately 135 miles (about 135 miles) of Interstate 90 from Rochester to the Pennsylvania border. Several roads in Erie County, which is expected to hit three feet of snow on Monday, will also be closed.
More than 5,000 flights have already been canceled ahead of winter storms, which are expected to bring blizzards and record cold temperatures.
Parts of upstate New York will be covered in snow, and areas near the coast, including New York City, will see rain for most of Friday, forecasters said.
Winds are likely to reach 60 mph from Friday through Saturday, and temperatures can quickly plummet to 35 degrees in some areas, bringing freezing cold and icy roads.
President Joe Biden said Thursday, “This is not like the snow days of my childhood. This is a serious problem.”
Other states are already feeling the effects of moving storms.
