The Dallas Mavericks star posted a historic 60-point triple-double on Tuesday night as he beat the New York Knicks 126-121 in overtime.
Doncic’s stats are impressive enough. He posted his career-high 60 points, 21 rebounds and 10 assists. – points, triple-double with 20 rebounds.
But what was really ridiculous was how he finished the fourth quarter.
Doncic and the Mavericks erased the Knicks’ 9-point lead in just 33 seconds, forcing overtime, thanks to a big second-half 3-pointer from Spencer Dinwiddie and a heroic final shot from Doncic.
But that shot came after Doncic somehow grabbed the rebound and put it back on himself after intentionally missing a free throw.
The reaction is incredible, as good as the shot.
The Mavericks then moved forward quickly in overtime, holding the Knicks to just two free throws in the first four minutes of overtime to complete the comeback and clinch a five-point victory. Doncic scored 7 of Dallas’ 11 points in overtime, making it 60 on the night.
After the win, Doncic said, “I’m so tired. I need a recovery beer.”
Quentin Grimes led the Knicks with 33 points and 6 rebounds, shooting 7 of 16 from the 3-point line. Julius Randle had 29 points and 17 rebounds. The Knicks went from eight straight wins to four straight losses.
According to ESPN’s Tim McMahon, NBA teams leading by 9 points or more with 35 seconds or less remaining in the game have gone 13,884-0 in the past 20 seasons. The Knicks are now the only team to break that lead in the last 20 years.
Dinwiddie added 25 points in the Mavericks win and Christian Wood finished with 19 points and 8 rebounds.
The Mavericks won four in a row, mostly thanks to Doncic. He averaged nearly 42 points, 9.8 assists and 11.8 rebounds in that stretch. That includes his 50-point addition against the Houston Rockets on Friday.
Relying solely on Doncic isn’t a long-term sustainable plan for Dallas, but there’s no dispute that strategy is working now.
