The Mega Millions jackpot jumped to $640 million ahead of the next final draw for 2022 on Friday. This could give new meaning to New Year’s prosperity for one lucky player.
The latest jackpot is $328.3 million in a single payout, but that’s because no player matched the six winning numbers on Tuesday night. Mega Millions said the prize was “by far the largest” offered in the final week of any year to date.
“And we were able to offer someone a very happy New Year’s celebration,” Lottery said.
According to Mega Millions, this is the sixth time the lottery has exceeded $600 million in its 20-year history. The last time a player won his $600 million or more was on July 29 when a unanimous partnership in Illinois earned him $1.337 billion.
No one has won a Grand Prix since mid-October, but Mega Millions said 40 tickets worth more than $1 million have been sold in 18 different states.
In Tuesday’s drawing, five tickets were matched with five white balls for a second tier prize of at least $1 million.
