The NFL’s Tennessee Titans delayed their scheduled noon CT game by an hour due to a rolling blackout in the area caused by winter storms and brutal cold.

“Due to extreme weather and power outages affecting our region, kickoff for today’s game has been postponed by one hour to 1:00 PM CT,” the Titans said in a statement.

“This decision was made in partnership with the NFL, Emergency Management Agency, Nashville Electrical Service, and the Mayor’s Office with the utmost care to ensure that the game does not adversely affect our community in any way.” We are exploring all possibilities to minimize unnecessary power in the surrounding area.”

Losing four straight games, the Titans (7-7) started at 1:00 p.m. CT against the Houston Texans (1-12-1) at Nissan Stadium in Nashville. According to CBS, the temperature at kick-off was 22 degrees Celsius, making it the coldest game ever at Nissan Stadium.

The Tennessee Valley Authority, a federally owned power company that supplies power to seven states in the region, said record high demand and generation problems related to weather had forced local power companies to suspend operations on Friday and Saturday. I was instructed to reduce the power load.

Chief Operating Officer Don Mall said: Authorities have urged residents to conserve electricity as it has “lost a generation” due to extreme cold and high winds. Still, TVA said Saturday it delivered the most electricity ever in the past 24 hours.

TVA said authorities ended the rolling blackout at noon on Saturday as temperatures rose slightly and the condition of the power system improved.

“While we recognize these planned temporary disruptions are challenges, they were necessary to maintain grid stability for 10 million people in seven states,” officials said. “Thank you for your cooperation in conserving energy and managing this extreme weather event.”

On Saturday morning, the local power company said it had been ordered to cut power for a short period of time. CDE Lightband, a utility company in Clarksville, Tennessee, TVA said Power off at 15 minute intervals.

Similarly, nashville electrical service It told customers to expect “intermittent, intermittent power outages” for about 10 minutes every hour and a half to two hours on Saturday morning.

During the blackout, Nashville Mayor John Cooper urged the Titans to postpone the game, says, “All non-essential businesses should reduce their electricity usage.”he issued a follow-up tweet he thanked Decision to delay the game by an hour.

In general, a prolonged cold snap can overwhelm the power grid as power supplies are cut off and demand spikes as residents heat up. For example, in Texas in February 2021, a winter storm and long cold spell caused a massive power outage in an area administered by the Texas Electrical Reliability Council, causing millions of residents to lose his week. Nearby was placed in the cold and darkness.

TVA notified residents on Friday that there would be rolling blackouts due to the winter storms, but the order was later rescinded.

Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland told CNN on Friday that hospitals and clinics are exempt. TVA did not anticipate the extent of the situation before the storm, he said.

“This is a real struggle. This has never happened in my lifetime and it hasn’t happened in Memphis for at least 50 years,” Strickland said Friday.

On Saturday morning, he said rolling blackouts across Memphis affected more than 50,000 people for about 30 to 60 minutes at a time, possibly two to three times a day.

“TVA has always prided itself on its reliability. This is the first time TVA has requested rolling blackouts,” Strickland told CNN. “We’ll dig deeper into why this happened.”

Strickland said temperatures are not expected to exceed 32 degrees Fahrenheit for at least the next two days.

Blackouts and rolling blackouts are affecting much of the United States, especially the Southeast.

About 250,000 customers were without power in Tennessee and more than 380,000 customers in North Carolina were without power as of 11 a.m. ET on Saturday, according to the website PowerOutage.US. In Davidson County, Tennessee, which includes Nashville, more than 60% of his customers had power outages, the site said.

Charlotte, N.C.-based utility Duke Energy announced an “emergency shutdown” Saturday morning as extremely cold temperatures are causing unusually high energy demand across the state.

“We have initiated short, temporary outages. These emergency outages are necessary to protect the energy grid from longer, more widespread outages. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.” The energy provider said in a tweet.
