Round of accumulating snow on the way Sunday night into Monday

Cedar Rapids, Iowa (KCRG) – A fast-moving storm system will bring periods of snow to eastern Iowa, potentially renewing smooth roads.

Storms will move across the region from the northwest to the southeast, with light snowfall. Precipitation is expected to begin after 4 p.m. in the Northwest and between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. He in the Iowa City and Cedar Rapids areas, reaching the Mississippi River by 10 p.m. However, it gradually adds up to 1-3 inches across the area.

Snow is expected to make the roads slippery, especially since most of the precipitation will occur during the dark hours of the evening through early Monday morning. The snow should usually stop around 6am, but the roads may remain smooth until Monday morning’s commute time.

If you’re coming home from the Christmas vacation weekend, be prepared for winter driving conditions from Sunday night through Monday morning. Allow yourself extra time to reach your destination, slow down in snowy areas and snow-covered roads, and allow more stopping distances for following vehicles.

Conditions should improve later in the day, as road crews are working to clear the streets and highways, with slightly warmer temperatures and more sunshine.

Beyond this storm system, temperatures rise throughout the week. Highs are expected to rise above freezing again by Wednesday, with rain and snow likely every day into next weekend.
