On Saturday, former President Trump’s lawyers dismissed the Jan. 6 commission’s criminal charges against Trump as “almost worthless.”

“The Department of Justice doesn’t have to follow suit,” Tim Perlatore told CNN. “There’s an existing investigation that we’ve been working on for quite some time. Speaking of which, it just politicizes the process.”

Parlatore is representing the former president in the Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation into the Jan. 6 riots and classified documents recovered from his home in Mar-a-Lago.

“It’s a political ruckus, but at this point it has no bearing on our defense,” he added.

Following the referral to the criminals, the commission’s 845-page final report was released on Thursday as the commission concludes its 18-month-long investigation.

The Justice Department doesn’t have to follow through with inquiries from congressional committees, but Chairman Benny Thompson, D-Miss., said Monday he was confident the DOJ would eventually indict Trump. said.

“The committee thought it through,” Thompson said in an interview with CNN. “And from my point of view, we couldn’t do anything but make introductions.”

“What our investigation found, in evaluating the evidence uncovered by our commission, is that these actions taken by former President Trump clearly caused problems for this country.” he added.
