A deadly blizzard hit the Midwest and Great Lakes on Thursday, soon to escalate into a bomb cyclone, and devastating winds hit the East Coast as well, killing millions of people ahead of the Christmas holiday weekend. It contributes to the travel nightmare.
Cheyenne’s National Weather Service said a record one-hour temperature drop plunged 51 degrees on Wednesday. The temperature he went from 42 degrees to minus 9 degrees in two hours. Cheyenne experienced localized temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius.
According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, police responded to more than 787 service calls, 196 driver assistance calls, and 104 crashes in a 12-hour period. A patrol has released footage showing the dangerous conditions as the storm swept across the southeastern part of the state and into the Nebraska Panhandle.
The NWS has issued a squall warning for Interstate 80 and US Highway 30 near Sydney, Nebraska. Transportation officials have also closed portions of Interstate 25, State Route 85 between Wyoming and Colorado, and Route 287 due to safety concerns.
Cheyenne’s NWS says, “A full tank of gas, supplies, blankets, food and a car kit all make a difference in a situation like this.”
Temperatures at Denver International Airport dipped briefly to minus 24 degrees Celsius Thursday morning. Monthly record low of minus 25 It was set in 1990, according to NWS.
