Friday flight cancellations top 2,500, disrupting holiday travel

(CNN) — Winter weather continues to disrupt vacation trips across the US on Friday, with travelers facing delays and cancellations during one of the busiest times of the year.

Chicago and Denver airports saw a ton of cancellations and delays on Thursday. Snow and ice at Chicago O’Hare International Airport averaged about three hours of delays on Thursday.

Record low temperatures were recorded in several locations in the west and south on Thursday.

Arctic explosions and rapidly raging winter storms have come at an unhappy time for travelers looking to spend the holidays with family and friends.

Train and bus services are also a hit

Amtrak has also been forced to delay or cancel passenger service on some routes in the Midwest and Northeast.

“Customers with reservations on trains that are being changed will typically be accommodated with similar departure times or trains on different dates,” Amtrak said in a notice.

“Amtrak will waive the surcharge for customers attempting to modify reservations during the modified schedule by calling the Reservations Center at 1-800-USA-RAIL.”

Meanwhile, Greyhound, the largest provider of intercity bus services, issued a service alert on Thursday warning customers traveling through the Midwest over the next two days that their trips could be delayed or canceled altogether. did.

Bus companies list more than a dozen cities as affected, from West Virginia to Minnesota. They include:

• Danville, Illinois

• Davenport, Iowa
