It is not uncommon for elected officials to spend a lot of money on travel. No. Flying around Washington, DC, there are plenty of refueled jets, and more first class is taken every time US congressmen return home to “voters” across the country.
What is unusual is the large amount of local government spending that went unsworn on trips around the country, including $14,000 in restaurant tabs and $70,000 in airline tickets and hotels. Santos appears to have told other U.S. lawmakers to stay off the beer as the campaign costs of the .
And sure, if he’s as wealthy and successful as he claims, he could have used his personal funds for travel outside of his constituency’s needs, right?

Let’s talk a little bit about typical travel expenses spent by other legislators in 2022.
Newly elected Republican Congressman Nick LaRota, also from Long Island, spent a total of $800 on hotels and $3,000 on airfare during the campaign. It’s not unreasonable to bring in campaign consultants from elsewhere, and of course they need some kind of accommodation.
That’s a linear comparison to $70,000 from the disgraced George Santos, who may have falsely claimed his mother died on 9/11, enough to make any New Yorker scream .
Santos spent $40,000 on airfare and $30,000 on hotels and Airbnb to run a local campaign where the only “significant” audience was in New York.
Santos also has a penchant for staying in hotels, according to New York Times research and reporting. Santos favored Hiltons and Hyatts and his GSTP Fathoms, which likely earned him top-notch status given his spending.
Santos’ campaign of $30,000 spent on hotel and Airbnb spending includes Tennessee, Virginia, Texas, Florida, California, Kansas, Michigan, Washington DC, New Jersey, and New York. It included a stay on its own.

Santos hasn’t been sworn in (yet), so he doesn’t even have to commute to DC much at this point. There are also reports that Santos used campaign funds to rent a house.
VIP benefits?
With $40,000 in airline costs, Santos would have cleared the hurdles to reach Diamond Medallion heights with Delta. This should help with future upgrades. The New York Post reports that out of $40,000 in airline spending, he paid $38,000 to Delta.
I’d like to know if Santos achieved Delta’s secret 360° VIP status, but given the airfare benefits last year, I’m wondering if $38,000 would have been enough.
To deceive the good people of Strong Island, he hopes he won’t get any of the benefits of these new trips in the end.
