Colorado Springs, Colorado (KKTV) – With the holiday season over, it’s hard to believe that the stress of holiday travel will go away anytime soon.
The 11 Breaking Weather Team says recent winter storms across the country are winding down. However, Colorado Springs Airport officials say the airline is still dealing with the fallout.
“What we’re starting to see now is a domino effect,” said Dana Shields of the Colorado Springs airport. “So when airlines create disruptions in their networks, it creates a sort of trickle-down effect. Thing.”
She told 11 News that airlines and airports typically see an influx of tourists around this time of year. This, coupled with more workers taking days off, causes more delays. But this year, tens of thousands of flights were canceled for days as most of the country dealt with winter storms. Shields says this poses a more complicated problem.
“I think it’s going to take some time for these careers to catch up,” she said.
Catching up was Southwest Airlines, which canceled flights from Colorado Springs until Monday night until Friday.
In the meantime, she recommends following certain steps to stay ahead of complications.
First and foremost, she recommends not calling the airport for flight information. They can’t help with most flight issues, she said, and those lines need to be left open for emergencies.
Instead, we recommend calling the airline directly for information.
She also recommends using the website Flight Aware to stay up to date on flights across the country.
Finally, she recommends being prepared for more crowds and waiting times.
“I always tell travelers during influx and travel, like in the summer and holiday seasons, more people are traveling and more can happen. I’m surrounded by more people who are going through a lot of different things,” she said.
She also said it’s not possible to pinpoint when this post-holiday congestion will ease, and travelers should be prepared for something in the coming weeks.
