Miami – After eight grueling days, Southwest’s roar seems to be coming to an end.
The airline announced on Thursday that it will return to normal service on Friday, issuing the following statement:
“We are encouraged by the progress we have made to reorganize our crew, their schedules, and our fleet. We know that there is only one place.”
There were signs of continued chaos at Miami International Airport on Thursday.
Dozens of unclaimed bags were waiting for their owners.
Traveler Coromoto Perez told Local 10 News Southwest that he canceled his flight Thursday night. The airline provided her with a hotel, but she did not provide ground transportation.
More than 2,300 flights were canceled throughout the day on Thursday, with 10,000 flights canceled in the past four days.
The airline has blamed an outdated system for failing to help with delays and cancellations caused by last weekend’s winter storms.
Southwest Airlines CEO Ben Jordan said:
However, there were signs of normal on Thursday, with some passengers saying they traveled southwest without delay.
“I had to be here for an event,” said traveler Stephanie Bent. “But thankfully I didn’t want them to do any magic, but they worked it out.”
The Department of Transportation has issued a formal warning to Southwest Airlines that it must bear the costs incurred by stranded travelers.
