CINCINNATI (WXIX) – Another day of Southwest flight cancellations has left thousands stranded at airports across the country, so it may be time for travel professionals to reconsider booking with a different airline says it can’t.
From LAX to JFK and here at CVG, many travelers have to figure out how to get to their destination.
More than 2,500 flights have been canceled by Southwest as of 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to FlightAware.
Southwest Airlines’ CEO apologizes to customers after days of mass cancellations, but one CVG traveler feels it doesn’t make up for the “Southwest meltdown.”
“People doing the work on the ground haven’t done anything wrong, but seeing the CEO come out on the news and say it wasn’t him and the COO’s mistakes are unacceptable to me.” said Kenneth Payne, who is flying to Mexico.
So what if you get stranded at the airport?
One travel expert says you should go to the U.S. Department of Transportation to check the refund policy.
“The U.S. Department of Transportation has pretty clear policies about when you can get reimbursement for extra hotel nights, meals, and even Uber rides to and from the airport,” says travel reporter Sean Cudahy. I will explain.
Cudahy says if you’re staying home to book a Southwest Airlines reservation, now is the time if you can afford to book another airline.
“If you had booked a trip to the Southwest at least now for the weekend, you would be more cautious about actually going ahead with that trip,” Cudahy explains. “I don’t know if we can expect the plane to take off at this point.”
Southwest Airlines has already canceled more than 2,300 flights on Thursday, including seven of the eight flights scheduled to depart or arrive at CVG, as FlightAware data shows.
