Funviralpark Stanton, Virginia (WHSV) – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has released a statement regarding road conditions in the Shenandoah Valley.
VDOT said multiple weather threats are creating dangerous driving conditions in the Valley and Allegany Highlands. Early morning rains and winter precipitation were replaced by powerful gusts and a sharp drop in temperature, according to VDOT. Additionally, many secondary roads in the northern valley are blocked by high water.
VDOT says drivers should avoid non-essential travel.
As of 11 a.m. Friday, temperatures across the region were below freezing and continue to drop rapidly. Strong winds and some sun have dried out many of the roads, but wet roads can freeze and become dangerously slippery.
VDOT says drivers who have to move should also look out for fallen trees, branches and utility lines blocking the road.
High water blocks approximately 20 secondary roads in Shenandoah, Frederick, Clark, and Warren counties.
Cold temperatures are expected to continue over the weekend. The driver should have an emergency kit and blankets or layers of clothing and a fully charged mobile device in case of vehicle breakdown or emergency.
