Roanoke, Virginia (WDBJ) – Travelers crossing the Roanoke Valley are facing delays and setbacks due to ongoing winter weather.

There have already been several cancellations at Roanoke Regional Airport, and expected weather on Friday could cause further delays, travel experts say.

About 2.8 million Virginians will travel before the holiday weekend. A spokesperson for Mid-Atlantic AAA explained that if plans cannot be adjusted, always plan for the weather.

“We should be very concerned about this storm because the temperatures are so cold,” Morgan Dean said.

Air travelers should research alternative flight plans in case their flight is cancelled. The executive director of the Roanoke Regional Airports Commission explained that there could be more cancellations and delays heading into Friday morning.

“Airlines must be safe, so delays and cancellations shouldn’t surprise them,” said Mike Stewart.

Delays and cancellations can create frustration ahead of your vacation.

“We actually considered changing our flight on Wednesday, but it didn’t work out for us and we had to stick with our plans,” said Tina McLeese. “I’m a little worried and hope for the best.”

On the road, VDOT crews are working to keep highways free of ice. A department spokesperson explained how the drop in temperatures is a concern for travelers and crew.

“We are certainly concerned about these very low temperatures and the amount of moisture that is already on the pavement,” said Jason Bond. Very icy conditions can be seen as roads freeze quickly.”

Experts have explained that drivers should slow down and avoid traveling toward Friday morning.

“If you have to go out, you need to be careful and pay particular attention to cool areas such as bridges, overpasses and ramps,” Bond said.

If your flight is cancelled, experts don’t bomb the ticket counters.
